Updated
Chicago furniture projects can involve very different receiving and layout decisions. A sidewalk café needs a site-specific plan, while furniture going into a McCormick Place exhibit must follow the event's handling and move-in arrangements.
Size the café around the reviewed pedestrian route
Chicago's current sidewalk café application provisions call for a plan addressing pedestrian flow, building entrances, traffic safety and the surrounding area's appearance. They also distinguish the applicant's establishment type. Confirm the application route for the business instead of reusing an old restaurant packet without checking its fit.
Make the plan useful for purchasing by identifying the exact chair, base, tabletop and boundary pieces. Include the occupied chair position and the route to neighboring entrances. The goal is a furniture schedule that can be compared directly with the reviewed plan; a photograph of a similar café cannot establish how much seating fits this frontage.
- Ask the project designer to approve the actual product footprints before the café order is finalized.
Do not send exhibit furniture ahead of the licensed move-in
McCormick Place states that freight arriving before the licensed move-in date will not be accepted and directs early-shipping needs to the general service contractor. Dock and service-elevator scheduling also runs through the event's production arrangements. A carrier's standard delivery appointment is only one part of that process.
For furniture purchased for an exhibit, compare shipment to an approved advance warehouse with shipment to the event under its current instructions. Record who receives the goods, checks damage, stores packaging and handles outbound collection. Keep the booth or event identifier on every handling document so a seating order is not mistaken for general venue stock.
- Obtain the current event shipping labels and accepted receiving window before releasing exhibit furniture.
Check ASUV eligibility before planning a self-delivery
McCormick Place's Automobile and Small Utility Vehicle program is for registered exhibitors at designated event times. It limits vehicle and handling-device types and requires check-in before dock access. Its instructions direct vehicles outside the criteria to the truck-marshaling process.
Assess the order in its packaged form. A few display chairs that staff can handle may be a different logistics task from a pallet of lounge pieces or a large table. Ask event management which process applies to the actual vehicle, personnel and shipment; buying furniture does not itself confer exhibitor access.
If self-delivery is accepted, plan both unloading and removal with the same care. Retain protective packaging where the event allows it, confirm the outbound route and identify staff responsible for moving the furniture. Do not assume a general parking reservation includes access to a loading dock.
- Send the vehicle type, packed-item dimensions and handling method to the event team for confirmation.
