Every banquet layout trades capacity for comfort and service space. The table below lists the square-foot-per-guest allowance used in the calculator above, including the standard answer to "how many does an 8-foot banquet table seat."

These allowances already account for aisles, service lanes, and normal chair spacing, they are not raw chair footprints. A room's usable area is its gross floor area minus any dance floor, stage, bar, or buffet line, since none of that space seats a guest. Reduce the usable area further for columns, low ceilings, or irregular room shapes that block a clean table grid.
The table count the calculator returns assumes an even grid at the seats-per-table figure above. Real rooms rarely divide perfectly, so treat the number as a planning estimate and confirm the final layout with a floor plan before ordering.

How many people does an 8-foot banquet table seat?
An 8-foot rectangular banquet table seats 8 to 10 guests: 3 to 4 per side plus one at each end. Most venues plan for 8 when the ends are used for service or centerpieces, and 10 when every seat is filled.
How do I calculate banquet hall seating capacity?
Take your room's usable floor area in square feet (length times width, minus any dance floor, stage, or bar footprint), then divide by the space allowance for your seating style. Round tables run 10 to 12 sq ft per guest, theater rows run 6 to 8, and cocktail receptions run 5 to 6. That gives a maximum guest count; the calculator above does this math automatically.
How many round tables do I need for a wedding or gala?
For 60-inch round tables, plan on 8 to 10 guests per table (9 is a common working average). Divide your guest count by 9 to estimate table count, then confirm the room can physically fit that many tables with room for aisles and service.
Does a dance floor or stage reduce my seating capacity?
Yes. A dance floor, stage, bar, or buffet line all take usable floor area away from seating. Subtract their square footage from the room total before calculating capacity, which is what the deductions field in the calculator above does.
